Another study, this time published in JAMA Cardiology, which indicates that e-cigarettes are not harmless, as originally thought: Habitual e-cigarette user (ages of 21 and 45 years) seem to evolve a shift in the so called cardiac autonomic balance towards sympathetic predominance. Sounds rather abstract!?
In plain word this means, that the natural heart rate variability of individuals having smoked e-cigarettes tended to have a higher heart rates and changes in the lipid metabolism – both indications for increased oxidative stress and inflammation which again alters the inner layer of vessels. So this may be associated with with increased cardiovascular risk (heart attacks later in life) if e-cigarettes are used in the long-term.
The researchers noted that they cannot confirm causality on the basis of this single study, and that further research into the potential adverse cardiovascular health effects of e-cigarettes is warranted
